Working Meeting October 2012

Registration is now open for the first GREAT3 Working Meeting.

Meeting Information

The meeting is to be held at Carnegie Mellon University from Wednesday October 17 - Friday October 19, 2012, ending midday on the 19th with time for optional working groups in the afternoon.

The meeting is being planned as a combination of working discussions to define and finalize the GREAT3 challenge (~80% of the time), interspersed with workshop-style research talks (~20% of the time).

Given the planned structure, this will not be a completely open workshop. People who want to get involved in defining GREAT3 are welcome to attend, even if they are not currently involved in the collaboration. But those who are simply interested in learning about the challenge to participate in it should wait for the challenge kickoff event in ~July 2013.

To register, please e-mail workshop@great3challenge.info by September 1 2012 and let us know:

  1. Are you definitely planning to attend, or are you seriously considering it?

    (We can extend registration later than Sept 1 provided that we have at least a general sense for how many people are still trying to finalize their plans.)

  2. If you are unable to attend in person, would you like to attend remotely by phone/skype/video?

    (So that we can make sure to have the proper facilities in place.)

  3. Do you need travel support?

    (As a reminder, we view this as an important working meeting to finalize the form of the challenge, so there is no registration fee. We do have some funds that can be used to support travel/lodging if necessary.)

  4. Are you interested in giving a talk, or is there some lensing / shape measurement development you'd be interested in hearing about?

    (We have to allocate the majority of the time to work on the challenge design, but we would like to intersperse these discussions and working groups with a few talks. Places will be limited, so unfortunately we can't guarantee an opportunity to talk for everyone.)

Local Information

There are numerous hotels within a 3 mile radius of CMU (nearly all with a free shuttle to campus and in close proximity to the city bus system), and several are within walking distance. Typical nightly rates range from $109-$169. Mid-October is a busy time for these hotels, as there are major events being held at both CMU and the nearby University of Pittsburgh. So, we have arranged a hotel block at one hotel that is 1.6 miles from campus, with a nightly rate of $129 (this rate includes breakfast, high-speed internet, shuttle to locations within 3 miles). The rooms in this block are guaranteed until September 25, 2012.
